How often to water your garden & lawn: a seasonal guide for Googong
Checked and refreshed each season by Googong Irrigation & Landscape, your local smart irrigation specialists serving Googong and surrounds.
Summer watering (December – February)
Summer is the highest-demand season for irrigation in Googong. Aim for 2–3 deep watering sessions a week for lawns rather than daily light watering, run in the early morning before 9am to cut evaporation loss, and check garden beds and pots separately. They often dry out faster than lawn and may need more frequent, shorter waterings. Check for pooling or dry patches that signal blocked or misaligned sprinkler heads.
Autumn watering (March – May)
As temperatures drop, most gardens and lawns in Googong can move to 1–2 waterings a week. Garden beds with mulch will hold moisture longer than exposed soil. Autumn is a good time to book a system tune-up before winter, and to check controller schedules so they're not still running on summer settings.
Winter watering (June – August)
Watering needs are lowest in winter for both gardens and lawns. Many systems can be paused or reduced to a single short weekly run, and a smart controller with a rain sensor will automatically skip cycles after rainfall, saving water and preventing overwatering of dormant lawns and winter plantings.
Spring watering (September – November)
Spring growth means it's time to gradually increase watering frequency again for both lawns and garden beds. It's also the ideal window to inspect for winter damage, replace worn sprinkler heads, and consider upgrading to a smart controller before the summer rush.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I water my garden and lawn in Googong over summer?
Most Googong gardens and lawns need 2–3 deep waterings a week in summer rather than short daily bursts, ideally early morning to reduce evaporation. A smart controller can adjust this automatically based on real-time weather.
Do I need to water my garden in winter?
Watering needs drop sharply in winter around Googong. Many systems can be reduced to once a week or paused, with a smart controller preventing watering after rain.
What is a smart irrigation controller?
A smart controller connects your irrigation system to the internet and local weather data, adjusting schedules automatically and letting you monitor and control watering from your phone.
How should I water native gardens?
Established natives prefer infrequent, deep watering at the roots. Drip line under mulch delivers water slowly where it's needed and wastes far less than spray heads.
